Scrap & Sculpture – A Workshop with Sam Hundley

*** THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL JUNE 13th ***

SCRAP & SCULPTURE – A sculpture workshop with American Scrap Artist Sam Hundley at THE DRAGONFLY ART STUDIO – 1511 Colley Ave, Norfolk.

Come learn the methods, processes, and mindset of the creator of whimsical, curious, and fantastic works of scrap art – this workshop offers a concentrated and hands-on approach to developing your own methods and theory behind the art of scrap sculpture, with insight from the artist himself, Sam Hundley.

*** THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL JUNE 13th ***

From the artist: “We’ll start off the workshop with a few brief, fun exercises that hopefully will trigger new ways of seeing things around us, enabling us to allow ideas to be revealed and harnessed – then, we’ll spend the rest of the time on finishing assemblages which are distinctive and personal. Please bring several objects that inspire you (smaller is better for this introduction). They can be things like flattened rusty metal cans, old tools, machine parts, plastic fragments, pieces of wood, etc. Choose items for their shape, color, surface, etc. I will bring some things from my personal collection that we can also use. Please also bring a background on which to compose your assemblage – such as a baking tray (roughly 11×14″) or something similar. I will bring some Goop, a strong adhesive for anchoring our assemblages, and some simple tools. If you’re currently working on a found-object assemblage, please bring it along – I’d love to see it!”

You’re encouraged to bring items with you that you would like to assemble into your own sculpture.

From the artist: “I’m no different from other artists in that I want my work to be relevant to the present and the future. But lately, I’ve been struggling with how to create art that reflects this current culturally divisive era in which we all live. Anger is a great motivator, but who needs more of that? So I’m starting to lean more heavily on the foot that’s planted in the past, hoping that there might be more that unites us than divides us… I may be wrong! But I’m hoping that if you join me at this show, we’ll be able to see the present differently by celebrating the many beautiful things we all have in common. Hope to see you there!”
